macOS recently introduced a radical new window management system called “Stage Manager.” When activated, it forces whatever application you are currently using into the dead centre of your screen, while aggressively shrinking all other open applications and throwing them into a vertical carousel on the left-hand side of your monitor. If you click an app in the sidebar, the two apps violently swap places via a massive animation.
While Apple designed this to help easily distracted users focus on a single task, it is highly disruptive for users who rely on complex, multi-window workflows. If you need to seamlessly drag files from a Finder window overlapping a web browser, while keeping a tiny chat window pinned to the corner of your screen, Stage Manager’s rigid grouping will completely destroy your setup. For power users who prefer the traditional, free-form overlapping window chaos of classic macOS, Stage Manager must be completely disabled.
Disabling Stage Manager via Control Center
The fastest way to turn off this aggressive window grouping is to use the macOS Control Center, exactly as you would on an iPad.
- Look at the absolute top-right corner of your Mac’s screen (the Menu Bar).
- Click the Control Center icon (it looks like two tiny pill-shaped toggle switches stacked on top of each other, sitting directly to the left of the date and time).
- A dropdown panel will appear showing your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and volume controls.
- Look for a square tile labelled Stage Manager. (It will likely be highlighted in a bright color if it is currently active).
- Click the Stage Manager tile once to turn it Off.
- The tile will turn grey, indicating the feature is disabled.
Ensuring Stage Manager Stays Off (System Settings)
If you want to ensure the feature is completely disabled at a system level and tweak exactly how your desktop behaves without it, you can verify the settings in the main control panel.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner and select System Settings….
- Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll down the main panel until you find the section labelled “Windows & Apps.”
- You will see a master toggle switch for Stage Manager. Ensure this switch is turned Off.
The moment you disable Stage Manager, your windows will instantly break free from their rigid, centre-focused cages. Your sidebar carousel will vanish, and you will be able to freely drag, overlap, and resize your application windows anywhere on your screen, exactly how traditional desktop computers have worked for decades.
