Removing Content Restrictions on Your Account
YouTube contains an unimaginably vast amount of video content, ranging from educational documentaries for children to mature, age-restricted content covering violence, strong language, or sensitive political topics. To help parents protect younger viewers, or to help schools and corporate offices maintain a professional environment, YouTube offers an optional setting called “Restricted Mode” (often colloquially referred to as SafeSearch).
When Restricted Mode is turned on, YouTube uses automated algorithms and community flagging to actively hide videos that may contain mature or potentially inappropriate content. It also completely hides the comment section on all videos to protect viewers from inappropriate language often found in user discussions.
If you are an adult using your own personal device and you notice that certain search results are mysteriously missing, or if every video you watch says “Comments are turned off for Restricted Mode”, you will need to disable this setting. The process is very simple, but it is important to note that the setting is applied at the browser level, not the account level. If you turn it off on your phone, it will still be turned on when you use your laptop.
How to Turn Off Restricted Mode (Desktop/Laptop)
If you are watching YouTube in a web browser on a Windows PC, Mac, or Chromebook, follow these steps to remove the filter.
- Open your web browser and go to YouTube.com.
- Look in the top right corner of the screen and click on your circular Profile Picture. (If you are not logged in, click the three vertical dots icon instead).
- A drop-down menu will appear. Scroll all the way to the bottom of this menu.
- Look for the option labelled Restricted Mode: On. Click it.
- A new panel will slide into view, containing a brief explanation of the feature and a toggle switch.
- Click the toggle switch to the Off (grey) position.
The YouTube page will automatically refresh. You will now be able to search for mature content, and the comment sections below videos will be visible once again.
How to Turn Off Restricted Mode (Mobile App)
If you are using the official YouTube application on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device, the setting is hidden slightly deeper within the menus.
- Open the YouTube app on your mobile device.
- Tap on your Profile Picture (or the “You” tab) located in the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Tap the gear icon (Settings) located in the top right corner of the screen.
- Tap on General.
- Scroll down until you find the toggle switch for Restricted Mode.
- Tap the switch so it turns Off (grey).
Why Can’t I Turn It Off? (Troubleshooting)
Occasionally, you may follow these steps only to find that the Restricted Mode toggle switch is greyed out and cannot be clicked, often accompanied by a padlock icon. This means you do not have permission to change the setting.
There are three common reasons for this:
- Network Restrictions: If you are connected to a public Wi-Fi network at a school, university, library, or corporate office, the network administrator has likely forced Restricted Mode on at the router level. You cannot turn it off while connected to their Wi-Fi. You must disconnect and use your cellular data instead.
- Parental Controls (Family Link): If your Google Account is managed by a parent using the Google Family Link app, and your account indicates you are under the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your country), your parent has permanently locked this setting. Only the parent account can unlock it.
- Browser Add-ons: Certain third-party antivirus software (like Norton or McAfee) or dedicated parental control browser extensions may force YouTube into Restricted Mode to protect you. You will need to dig into the settings of your specific antivirus software to disable the web filtering.
If none of these apply, simply try clearing your browser’s cookies and cache, then log back into YouTube and try toggling the switch again.
