How to Recover Deleted Text Using the Undo and Redo Buttons in Google Keep

When you are typing a long, detailed paragraph in Google Keep, one accidental swipe across your smartphone keyboard can highlight the entire block of text. If you type a single letter while the text is highlighted, your entire paragraph is instantly deleted and replaced by that one letter. Because Google Keep aggressively auto-saves your notes to the cloud in real-time, panic often sets in, as users assume the deleted text is gone forever. Fortunately, Google Keep includes powerful, built-in Undo and Redo features to instantly recover your mistakes.

How to Recover Deleted Text on a Computer Browser

If you are typing a note on your desktop or laptop computer via the Google Keep web interface, the recovery process relies on standard system keyboard shortcuts.

  • To Undo (Recover): The moment you accidentally delete a paragraph or make a massive formatting mistake, stop typing. Immediately press Ctrl + Z (on Windows) or Command + Z (on macOS). Google Keep will instantly rewind its history state, restoring the deleted text to the screen. You can press this shortcut multiple times to step backward through your recent edits.
  • To Redo (Go Forward): If you pressed Undo too many times and accidentally erased a sentence you actually wanted to keep, press Ctrl + Y (on Windows) or Command + Shift + Z (on macOS). This jumps you forward in the history timeline, replacing the text.

How to Recover Deleted Text on the Mobile App

If you are using the Google Keep mobile app on an iOS or Android device, you do not have access to a physical keyboard to trigger the shortcuts. Instead, Google provides dedicated buttons built directly into the app interface.

  1. When you make a mistake while typing on your phone, look down at the grey toolbar located just above your smartphone’s virtual keyboard.
  2. On the left side of this toolbar, you will see a curved arrow pointing backward to the left. This is the Undo button. Tap it once to instantly recover your deleted text.
  3. Directly next to it is a curved arrow pointing forward to the right. This is the Redo button. Tap it to reverse the Undo action if you went too far.

Crucial Warning: The Undo and Redo history is tied strictly to your current, active editing session. If you accidentally delete a paragraph, close the note, force-quit the Google Keep app, and then reopen the app an hour later, the Undo history will be permanently wiped. You can only recover mistakes immediately after they happen, while the note is still actively open on your screen.
