How to Turn Off Video Playback in Feeds on YouTube to Save Mobile Data

As you scroll through the Home tab, Subscriptions, or Search results in the YouTube mobile app, videos automatically begin playing muted previews with animated closed captions. While this “Playback in feeds” feature helps preview video contents before tapping, it continuously buffers high-definition video in the background, consuming substantial mobile data allowances and accelerating smartphone battery drain. Fortunately, YouTube allows you to restrict feed previews to Wi-Fi only or disable them entirely.

Why Disable Playback in Feeds?

Disabling inline feed playback provides immediate benefits for casual mobile viewing:

  • Significant Data Savings: Background video buffering consumes dozens of megabytes per minute of scrolling, which quickly exhausts metered mobile data contracts.
  • Reduced Battery and Processor Load: Decoding video streams and rendering real-time animated captions while scrolling taxes smartphone GPUs and processors.
  • Distraction-Free Browsing: Moving previews can feel visually overwhelming when you are simply looking for a specific video or browsing channel uploads.
  • Accurate Watch History: When a video previews in your feed for more than a few seconds, YouTube sometimes logs it into your Watch History and influences your recommendation algorithm.

Turning Off Playback in Feeds on Android and iPhone

Follow these steps to adjust feed playback behaviour in the official YouTube app on iOS and Android:

  1. Launch the YouTube app on your device.
  2. Tap your profile icon (You) in the bottom-right corner.
  3. Tap the Settings gear icon located in the upper-right corner.
  4. Select General from the settings menu.
  5. Tap Playback in feeds.
  6. Choose your preferred operational mode:
    • Always on: Previews play over both mobile data and Wi-Fi connections.
    • Wi-Fi only: Previews play exclusively when connected to an unmetered Wi-Fi network, preserving cellular data plans.
    • Off: Completely disables animated previews across all feeds, restoring static video thumbnails.

Managing Autoplay on the YouTube Web Browser Version

If you also browse YouTube on a desktop or laptop web browser, you can control inline thumbnail previews through browser playback settings:

  1. Navigate to YouTube.com in your desktop browser.
  2. Click your circular profile avatar in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, click Playback and performance.
  4. Locate the Inline playback toggle (which controls video previews when hovering over thumbnails).
  5. Toggle Inline playback to Off. Hovering your mouse over video cards will now display static thumbnails rather than triggering preview streams.

Distinguishing Feed Playback from End-of-Video Autoplay

Keep in mind that “Playback in feeds” is separate from the standard Autoplay toggle found inside the video player screen. The player toggle controls whether YouTube automatically starts playing a recommended video after your current video ends, whereas “Playback in feeds” controls muted scrolling previews on discovery screens.
