The Infinite Scroll Distraction
The primary Google application on your smartphone (the one simply named “Google” with the multi-colored ‘G’ logo) is designed to be the fastest way to perform a web search. However, immediately beneath the search bar, Google presents a feature called “Discover.” This is an infinitely scrolling feed of news articles, blog posts, and YouTube videos algorithmically tailored to your specific interests and search history. While Discover can be an excellent way to find interesting content when you are bored, it is a massive productivity killer if you simply opened the app to check a quick fact or do a calculation. Before you know it, you have spent twenty minutes reading an article about a movie you don’t even plan to watch. If you use the Google app strictly as a search utility, you should turn this news feed off.
How to Turn Off Discover
You can disable the news feed entirely from within the Google app’s settings menu.
- Open the Google app on your iPhone or Android device.
- Look at the top right corner of the screen and tap on your Profile Picture (or initial).
- Select Settings from the pop-up menu.
- Tap on General.
- Locate the toggle switch labeled Discover.
- Tap the switch to turn it Off.
The Resulting Minimalist Interface
Tap the back arrow and return to the main screen of the Google app. The change is immediate. The massive feed of articles, images, and headlines will completely vanish. In its place, you will see a beautifully clean, minimalist white screen featuring only the Google logo and the empty search bar, exactly like the classic desktop homepage. The app will now load significantly faster and use less background data, as it is no longer constantly pre-fetching high-resolution article thumbnails every time you open it.
