Why Does Google Docs Change Fractions?
When typing in Google Docs, you might notice that typing a fraction like “1/2” or “3/4” automatically converts into a tiny, specially formatted character (½ or ¾). This is caused by the built-in Automatic Substitution feature.
While this looks neat and professional in some documents, it can be extremely frustrating if you are writing mathematical equations, typing dates that use slashes, or writing code snippets where standard keyboard characters are strictly required.
How to Turn Off Automatic Fraction Formatting in Google Docs
You can quickly disable this substitution directly from the Google Docs menu bar.
- Open a document in Google Docs on your web browser.
- In the top menu bar, click on Tools.
- Select Preferences from the dropdown menu.
- A small Settings window will appear. Click on the Substitutions tab at the top.
- You will see a long list of automatic replacements.
- Scroll down the list until you find the entries for fractions (e.g., Replace 1/2 With ½).
- Uncheck the box to the left of any fraction you want to stop converting.
- If you want to stop all automatic replacements entirely, you can simply uncheck the master box labelled Automatic substitution at the top of the window.
- Click the blue OK button to save your changes.
From now on, when you type numbers separated by a forward slash, Google Docs will leave them exactly as you typed them, preserving the standard text formatting.
