By default, when you click a download link in Mozilla Firefox, the browser will automatically download the file and save it directly to your computer’s default “Downloads” folder without asking any questions. While this is fast and efficient for most users, it can result in a heavily cluttered Downloads folder filled with random installers, PDFs, and images. If you prefer to keep your files meticulously organized by saving documents to your Documents folder and images to your Pictures folder immediately upon downloading, you can force Firefox to ask for a destination every single time.
How to Force Firefox to Ask Where to Save Files
You can change the download behavior in the general settings menu.
- Open the Mozilla Firefox browser.
- Click the Application Menu button (the three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Ensure you are on the General tab in the left-hand sidebar.
- Scroll down the page until you locate the Files and Applications section.
- Look under the “Downloads” sub-heading.
- You will see two radio button options. The first is “Save files to” (which is selected by default).
- Click the second radio button, labelled Always ask you where to save files, to select it.
From this point forward, whenever you click a download link on a website, Firefox will not automatically download the file in the background. Instead, a standard operating system “Save As” window will pop up, forcing you to manually select the exact folder location where you want the new file to reside before the download can begin.
