When you are sitting in a lecture hall or a creative brainstorming meeting, typing on a small digital keyboard is often too slow to capture complex diagrams or flowing ideas. To support free-form note-taking, Google Keep includes a powerful drawing canvas that allows you to sketch or write by hand using a stylus or your finger. Even more impressively, Google Keep features built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition) AI that can read your messy handwriting and instantly convert it into editable, searchable digital text.
How to Access the Drawing Canvas
While the drawing tool is technically available on the desktop web interface using a mouse, it is specifically designed for the Google Keep mobile app on smartphones and tablets.
- Open the Google Keep app.
- Look at the bottom toolbar. Tap the Paintbrush icon.
- A blank canvas will open. At the bottom, you will see a toolbar containing various tools: a pen, a marker, a highlighter, an eraser, and a selection tool.
- Tap the Pen tool. If you tap it a second time, you can adjust the ink color and the thickness of the line.
You can now use your finger (or a dedicated stylus, like an Apple Pencil) to write words directly onto the screen, exactly as you would on a physical notepad.
How to Convert Handwriting to Text
Once you have finished writing out a paragraph of text by hand, you can instruct Google Keep to transcribe it.
- Exit the drawing canvas by tapping the back arrow in the top-left corner. Your drawing will be saved as an image block at the top of a standard note.
- Tap the drawing image itself to open it in full-screen view.
- In the top-right corner, tap the Three Dots (More Options) menu.
- From the drop-down menu, select Grab image text.
The app will pause for a brief second as it analyzes your pen strokes. When it finishes, it will exit the full-screen view. You will now see that your handwritten words have been perfectly transcribed and pasted into the standard body of the note as fully editable, typed text.
Because the AI is highly advanced, it can usually read cursive writing and messy scribbles, though perfectly neat print will always yield the most accurate transcription results.
