Why Did My Chrome Homepage Change?
When you launch Google Chrome, you usually expect to see either a blank “New Tab” page or a specific website you set, like Google.com or a news aggregator. However, you might suddenly find that Chrome automatically opens to a random search engine (like Yahoo or Bing), a strange toolbar portal, or a promotional landing page every time you start it.
This unwanted behavior is almost always caused by a rogue browser extension or a piece of bundled adware that hijacked your settings during the installation of another program. These hijackers forcefully change your startup configuration to generate ad revenue. You need to take back control of your browser and lock down your startup page.
How to Stop Chrome from Opening Unwanted Pages on Startup
To fix this, you must explicitly tell Chrome what to do “On startup” and remove the offending extension.
- Open Google Chrome on your desktop.
- Click the More (three dots) icon in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on On startup.
- You will see three options. If your browser was hijacked, it is likely set to “Open a specific page or set of pages,” with a strange URL listed below it.
- Click the three dots next to the strange URL and select Remove.
- Change the main setting to Open the New Tab page (or manually add the URL you actually want, like
https://www.google.com).
Crucial Final Step: Remove the Hijacker
Changing the setting above will not work permanently if the malicious extension is still installed; it will simply change the setting back tomorrow.
- Click the Extensions puzzle piece icon in the top right corner of Chrome and select Manage extensions.
- Carefully review the list of installed extensions. Look for anything you do not explicitly recognize, especially generic names like “PDF Converter,” “Search Manager,” or “New Tab Customizer.”
- Click Remove on any suspicious extensions to permanently prevent them from altering your homepage again.
