How to Create and Share a Collaborative Shared Album in Google Photos

Following a family holiday, wedding, birthday party, or weekend road trip, gathering photos taken by different people across different smartphones usually turns into a chaotic mess of compressed WhatsApp messages and broken AirDrop attempts. Google Photos provides a clean, cross-platform solution with Shared Albums. Anyone with a Google account—whether using an iPhone, Android device, Mac, or Windows PC—can view, download, and contribute full-resolution photos and videos to a single central collection.

Why Use Google Photos Shared Albums?

Shared albums eliminate the friction of event photography:

  • Full Resolution Quality: Preserves original camera detail, HDR colours, and 4K video clips without heavy messaging app compression.
  • Two-Way Collaboration: Invited members can upload their own pictures and videos directly into the album from their own photo libraries.
  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Works seamlessly across iOS, Android, and web browsers without requiring specific mobile operating systems.
  • Smart Notifications: Alerts contributors whenever new photos, comments, or likes are added.

How to Create a Shared Album on Mobile (Android & iPhone)

Setting up a new shared album from your phone takes less than a minute:

  1. Open the Google Photos app on your iPhone or Android phone.
  2. Tap on Collections (or Library) in the bottom navigation bar.
  3. Tap on Albums, then tap the New album button (the “+” tile).
  4. Type a descriptive title for your album (e.g., Summer Vacation 2026).
  5. Tap Select photos, choose the initial photos and videos you want to include, and tap Add.
  6. Tap the Share button located in the top-right corner.
  7. Choose how to invite contributors:
    • Select specific Google Contacts by typing their names or email addresses.
    • Or tap Create link to generate a shareable web link that you can paste into messaging group chats.

How to Allow Others to Add Their Own Photos

By default, invited members can contribute photos, but you can verify and manage collaboration permissions:

  1. Open the shared album and tap the three-dots menu (â‹®) in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Ensure the Collaborate toggle is switched On. This allows invited members to add their own media.
  4. Ensure Comments & likes is enabled if you want guests to interact with memories.
  5. If you ever want to close the album to new uploads while keeping it readable, simply turn the Collaborate toggle Off.

How to Save Shared Photos to Your Personal Library

Photos added to a shared album do not automatically consume your personal Google storage quota. If a family member uploads a great shot that you want to keep permanently in your personal timeline, open the picture and tap the Save button (cloud with a down arrow). The photo is safely copied to your personal Google Photos library.
