How to Make Google Chrome the Default Browser

If you click a link in an email or a PDF document, your computer will automatically open that link using its pre-programmed default web browser. If you use a Windows PC, it will forcefully open Microsoft Edge. If you use a Mac, it will forcefully open Apple Safari. If you prefer the speed, extensions, and cross-device syncing of Google Chrome, this behavior is incredibly frustrating.

You must explicitly command your operating system to route all web traffic through Google Chrome instead of its native software. Both Microsoft and Apple intentionally make this process slightly convoluted to keep you trapped in their respective ecosystems.

Method 1: The Quick In-Browser Prompt (Easiest)

Google Chrome is highly aggressive about wanting to be your default browser. The easiest way to change the setting is to simply let Chrome do the heavy lifting for you.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. If Chrome is not currently your default browser, a massive banner will usually appear directly below the address bar saying “Google Chrome isn’t your default browser.”
  3. Click the blue button inside the banner that says Set as default.
  4. Depending on your operating system, this will either instantly change the setting, or it will immediately open the correct Settings menu on your computer where you can manually make the switch.

If the banner is missing, you must dive into the operating system settings yourself.

Method 2: How to Set Chrome as Default in Windows 11

Microsoft aggressively protects Edge in Windows 11, and the process of switching defaults is notoriously complex.

  1. Click the Start Button (the Windows logo on your taskbar) and click the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. On the left-hand navigation menu, click Apps.
  3. In the main window, click Default apps.
  4. You will see a search bar labeled “Set defaults for applications.” Type Chrome into this box.
  5. Click on Google Chrome when it appears in the list below the search bar.
  6. Look at the absolute top of the screen. You will see a banner that says “Make Google Chrome your default browser.”
  7. Click the Set default button.

A small checkmark will appear. Windows will instantly reroute all standard web links (HTTP and HTTPS) away from Edge and directly into Chrome.

Method 3: How to Set Chrome as Default on a Mac

Apple makes this process significantly easier than Microsoft, consolidating the setting into a single drop-down menu.

  1. Click the Apple Logo in the extreme top left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Settings from the drop-down menu (or System Preferences on older Macs).
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Desktop & Dock.
  4. Scroll down the right-hand panel until you find a section called “Windows & Apps.”
  5. Look for a drop-down menu labeled Default web browser. (It will likely be set to Safari).
  6. Click the drop-down menu and select Google Chrome.

The change is instantaneous. The next time you click a link in the Apple Mail app, it will instantly launch Chrome instead of Safari.
