How to Make Google Chrome the Default Browser

If you click a hyperlink in an email or a PDF document, your computer will automatically open that link in its factory-default web browser. On a Windows machine, this is Microsoft Edge. On an Apple Mac, this is Safari. If you prefer to use Google Chrome, it is incredibly frustrating to constantly have the wrong browser launch, forcing you to manually copy and paste the URL over to Chrome.

You can tell your operating system to permanently demote Edge or Safari, and elevate Google Chrome to the primary default browser slot. Every link you click will instantly open in Chrome from that moment on.

Method 1: The One-Click Chrome Prompt (Fastest)

Google desperately wants you to use Chrome, so they built a dedicated trapdoor directly into the browser itself to bypass complicated operating system menus.

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top right corner of the window.
3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
4. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Default browser.
5. In the main window, you will see a large button that says Make default. Click it.

Depending on your operating system, this will either instantly change the setting, or it will automatically open the exact Settings menu you need in Windows or macOS, highlighting the exact button you need to click.

Method 2: How to Change it in Windows 11

Microsoft made changing the default browser notoriously difficult in Windows 11 to try and force users to stick with Microsoft Edge. If the one-click method above fails, you must do it manually through the Windows Settings app.

1. Click the Start Button (the Windows logo on your taskbar) and click the gear icon to open Settings.
2. In the left sidebar, click on Apps.
3. Click on Default apps.
4. In the search box that says “Search for apps,” type Google Chrome.
5. Click on the Google Chrome icon when it appears.
6. At the very top of the screen, you will see a banner that says “Make Google Chrome your default browser.” Click the Set default button.

You will see a massive list of file types below it (like .htm and .html) instantly switch their icons from the blue Edge logo to the colorful Chrome logo. You are finished.

Method 3: How to Change it on an Apple Mac

Apple makes this process significantly easier than Microsoft, requiring only a quick trip to the System Settings.

1. Click the Apple Logo in the top left corner of your Mac screen.
2. Select System Settings… (or System Preferences on older Macs).
3. Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Desktop & Dock.
4. Scroll down the right-hand panel until you find a section labeled “Windows & Apps.”
5. Look for a drop-down menu labeled Default web browser. It will currently be set to Safari.
6. Click the drop-down menu and select Google Chrome.

You do not need to click a save button; the Mac instantly applies the change. Every email link you click from now on will launch directly into Chrome.
