How to Pin a Note in Google Keep

Google Keep is a versatile digital notepad for capturing quick ideas, creating checklists, saving links, and organising reminders. However, as your collection of notes grows, your workspace can quickly become cluttered. Important lists get pushed down the screen by newer notes, making them difficult to find when you need them most.

To solve this problem, Google Keep includes a pinning feature that lets you permanently stick essential notes to the top of your workspace. Pinned notes are separated from the chronological timeline and always appear first, regardless of when they were created or last edited.

How to Pin a Note on a Computer (Web Browser)

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to keep.google.com.
  2. Scroll through your workspace and locate the note you want to keep at the top.
  3. Hover your mouse cursor over the note.
  4. A row of small action icons will appear at the bottom of the note, and a pushpin icon will appear in the top-right corner of the note card.
  5. Click the pushpin icon.

Immediately, your workspace will reorganise into two distinct sections: “Pinned” at the top and “Others” below. Your selected note will move to the Pinned section and remain there permanently until you choose to unpin it.

You can also pin a note whilst viewing it in full screen:

  1. Click on the note to open it.
  2. Click the pushpin icon in the toolbar at the top of the note.
  3. Close the note. It will now appear in the Pinned section.

How to Pin a Note on the Mobile App (Android and iOS)

  1. Open the Google Keep app on your smartphone or tablet.
  2. Tap on the note you want to prioritise to open it.
  3. Look at the top-right corner of the screen. You will see a pushpin icon next to the reminder bell icon.
  4. Tap the pushpin icon. It will change appearance (typically becoming filled or changing colour) to indicate pinning is active.
  5. Tap the back arrow in the top-left corner to return to your main workspace.

A dedicated “Pinned” section will now appear at the top of your app, with all remaining notes displayed under “Others” below.

Pinning Multiple Notes Quickly on Mobile

If you need to pin several notes at once:

  1. Long-press on the first note you want to pin. The note will become selected (a blue tick will appear).
  2. Tap on each additional note you want to select.
  3. Tap the pushpin icon in the top toolbar.

All selected notes will be pinned simultaneously.

Practical Uses for Pinned Notes

Pinning is most effective when used strategically for notes you reference frequently:

  • Shopping and grocery lists: Pin your current shopping list so it is always the first thing you see when opening Google Keep at the shops.
  • Weekly to-do lists: Keep your current week’s tasks pinned at the top and unpin them once completed.
  • Reference information: Pin notes containing frequently accessed information such as Wi-Fi passwords, booking references, serial numbers, or important phone numbers.
  • Project checklists: If you are working on a specific project, pin the master checklist so it remains accessible without scrolling.
  • Meeting agendas: Pin upcoming meeting notes so they are immediately visible when you need them.

How Pinned Notes Are Organised

Within the Pinned section, notes are arranged in the same order they appear in your workspace. You can rearrange pinned notes by dragging and dropping them:

  • On a computer: Click and hold a pinned note, then drag it to a new position within the Pinned section.
  • On mobile: Long-press and drag the note to reorder it.

There is no limit to the number of notes you can pin, but pinning too many defeats the purpose. A good practice is to keep only 5–10 notes pinned at any given time.

Pinned Notes and Labels

Pinned notes interact seamlessly with Google Keep’s label system:

  • If you filter notes by a specific label, only pinned notes with that label will appear in the Pinned section.
  • Pinning a note does not affect its labels or colour coding.
  • You can pin notes across different labels, and each label view will show only the relevant pinned notes.

This means you can have different pinned notes visible depending on which label view you are browsing, making it easier to organise project-specific priorities.

How to Unpin a Note

When a note is no longer a priority (for example, you have finished your shopping or completed a project), removing it from the Pinned section is straightforward.

  • On a computer: Hover over the pinned note and click the highlighted pushpin icon to unpin it. The note will return to chronological order in the “Others” section.
  • On mobile: Open the pinned note and tap the highlighted pushpin icon at the top of the screen. Alternatively, long-press to select multiple pinned notes and tap the pushpin icon to unpin them all at once.

Pinned Notes Sync Across All Devices

Because Google Keep is cloud-based, pinning a note on one device instantly reflects across all your devices. If you pin a note on your desktop browser, it will appear pinned on your phone and tablet as well. This synchronisation happens automatically and requires no additional configuration.

Pinning is a simple but powerful organisational tool that ensures your most important information is always immediately accessible, regardless of how many notes you accumulate over time.
