Google Keep is one of the fastest and most efficient note-taking apps available. While it is excellent for jotting down quick ideas or saving links, its most powerful feature is the ability to create interactive checklists. Whether you are managing a complex grocery list, tracking daily tasks, or organising a packing list for an upcoming trip, checkboxes make it incredibly easy to track your progress.
Unlike standard text notes, a Google Keep checklist allows you to cross off items with a single tap, automatically moving them to the bottom of the list to keep your active tasks clutter-free.
In this guide, you will learn how to create a new checklist, convert existing text notes into checklists, and manage your tasks effectively on both desktop and mobile.
How to Create a New Checklist in Google Keep
Creating a new list from scratch is the easiest way to start organizing your tasks.
On Desktop (Web Browser)
- Open Google Keep in your web browser.
- Instead of clicking the main “Take a note…” text box, look at the small icons on the right side of the box.
- Click the New list icon (it looks like a small square with a checkmark).
- A new note will open with a checkbox ready for your first item.
- Type your task and press Enter to automatically create the next checkbox.
On Mobile (Android & iOS)
- Open the Google Keep app on your smartphone.
- At the bottom of the screen, tap the Checkbox icon in the lower-left corner.
- Type your first list item and tap Next or Return on your keyboard to add the next item.
How to Convert an Existing Note into a Checklist
If you have already typed out a standard list in a normal text note, you do not need to delete it and start over. You can instantly convert any text note into a checklist.
- Open the existing Google Keep note.
- Click or tap the three-dot menu icon (More options) at the bottom of the note.
- Select Show checkboxes from the menu.
Google Keep will automatically place a checkbox next to every line of text in your note. If you ever want to revert it back to normal text, simply open the menu again and select Hide checkboxes.
Managing Checked Items
When you click or tap a checkbox, the item will be crossed out and moved to a “Completed items” section at the bottom of the note. This keeps your active tasks at the top.
If you want to uncheck an item, simply scroll down to the “Completed items” section, uncheck the box, and the item will instantly move back up to your active list.
Improving Your Daily Organization
By utilizing checklists in Google Keep, you can turn a messy wall of text into an actionable, satisfying productivity tool. Because Google Keep syncs instantly across your Google account, you can create a grocery list on your computer and easily tick off the items on your phone while walking through the store.
