The Smart Chip Intrusion
Google Docs integrates deeply with your broader Google Workspace (Gmail, Contacts, Calendar). One of the more aggressive integration features is “Smart Chips.” If you type the “@” symbol followed by a few letters, Google Docs will automatically generate a dropdown menu suggesting contacts from your Gmail address book, files from your Google Drive, or upcoming calendar events. While this is useful for quickly tagging a colleague in a collaborative document, it is incredibly annoying if you are writing technical documentation, coding tutorials, or formatting email templates where the “@” symbol is used strictly for syntax or placeholder text, as the aggressive popup menu constantly blocks your view.
Disabling the Smart Menu
To reclaim the @ symbol for standard typing and stop Google Docs from automatically suggesting contacts and files via the Smart Chips menu, you must modify the application’s core preferences.
Open any Google Docs document while logged into your Google account (this is a global setting, so changing it in one document changes it for all). In the top menu bar, click on Tools. From the dropdown list, select Preferences. A dialogue window will appear on your screen. Ensure you are looking at the General tab. Locate the checkbox labeled Show Smart Chips (or in some newer interface iterations, it may be phrased as Suggest contacts when you type @). Click the checkbox to uncheck it. Click the blue OK button at the bottom of the window to save and apply the changes. From now on, typing the “@” symbol will simply input the character as standard text without triggering the intrusive suggestion menu.
