The Blue Squiggles
Google Docs is equipped with a highly advanced, machine-learning-driven grammar checker. As you type, it constantly analyzes your sentence structure against standard English rules. If it detects a grammatical error, a split infinitive, or an awkward phrasing, it underlines the text with a jagged blue line. While this is an excellent tool for drafting formal reports or academic papers, it is incredibly distracting for creative writers, novelists writing character dialogue, or coders documenting snippets where strict, formal grammar rules are intentionally broken or simply don’t apply.
Disabling the Grammar Police
To maintain a clean writing canvas and stop Google Docs from automatically suggesting grammar corrections and underlining your text in blue, you must disable the grammar checker in the Tools menu.
Open the Google Doc that is covered in blue lines. Navigate to the top menu bar and click on Tools. Hover your mouse over the very first option in the dropdown list, which is Spelling and grammar. A secondary sub-menu will slide out to the side. Look down this list for the option explicitly named Show grammar suggestions. By default, this will have a small checkmark next to it, indicating it is active. Click on Show grammar suggestions once to uncheck it. The jagged blue underlines will instantly vanish from your entire document. (If you also want to remove the red underlines for made-up words or fantasy names, you can uncheck “Show spelling suggestions” in the exact same menu).
