The Fractured Paragraph
Google Docs incorporates advanced formatting tools commonly found in desktop publishing software to help manage text flow. One of these features relates to how paragraphs break across different pages. If you type a heading at the very bottom of page one, Docs will often automatically insert a page break to force that heading onto the top of page two, ensuring it stays with the paragraph that follows it. While excellent for standard reports, this automatic pagination creates chaos if you are trying to maximize every inch of a single page (like a resume) or if you are using the modern “Pageless” view where traditional page breaks shouldn’t apply.
Disabling Smart Pagination
To ensure your text stays exactly where you type it and stop Google Docs from automatically inserting page breaks to keep lines together, you must adjust the line spacing options.
Highlight the specific paragraph or heading that keeps jumping to the next page. Navigate to the top menu bar, click on Format, select Line & paragraph spacing, and then click on Keep with next to uncheck it. You should also click on Keep lines together to uncheck that as well. By turning off these two specific typographical rules, Google Docs will no longer try to intelligently group the text block, allowing it to sit naturally at the bottom margin of the page or split across the page break exactly where the margin dictates.
