The Hidden Anchors
Bookmarks in Google Docs are invisible anchors placed within the text, allowing you to create clickable hyperlinks that jump the reader directly to a specific paragraph or section within the same document, much like a table of contents. Usually, bookmarks must be created manually via the Insert menu. However, if you are collaborating on a document, importing text from Microsoft Word, or running certain third-party formatting add-ons, you might find that Google Docs appears to be automatically creating bookmarks next to random words or headings. These manifest as small, blue ribbon icons hanging off the left side of the text, cluttering your view and potentially confusing the document’s navigation structure.
Removing and Preventing Automatic Bookmarks
To stop Google Docs from automatically cluttering your document with bookmarks, you must identify the source (usually imported styles or add-ons) and manually clear the existing anchors.
Google Docs natively does not automatically generate bookmarks; they are always the result of an external action. First, if you just pasted text from another source (like a webpage or Word document), the bookmarks came with the formatting. To fix this, always use Edit > Paste without formatting (`Ctrl + Shift + V` or `Cmd + Shift + V` on Mac) when importing text. If the bookmarks are already there, you must delete them manually. Click on the blue ribbon icon next to the text. A small pop-up menu will appear containing the bookmark link and a Remove (trash can) icon. Click the trash can to delete the anchor. If bookmarks continue to appear automatically while you type, the culprit is a third-party extension. Go to Extensions > Add-ons > Manage add-ons and disable any tools related to “Table of Contents,” “Document Navigation,” or “Auto-Formatting” to prevent them from injecting code into your document.
