How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Indenting Headers

The Formatting Override

Google Docs tries to interpret the structure of your document as you type. If you create a line of text that is significantly shorter than the others and bold it, or if you apply one of the built-in “Heading” styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.), Google Docs treats that line as a structural block. Depending on the theme you are using or specific auto-formatting settings, Google Docs may automatically indent these headers, pushing them to the right, separate from the standard left-aligned body text. While this creates a specific visual hierarchy, it is highly undesirable if you require a strict, flush-left block format for a professional report or an academic paper.

Removing Automatic Header Indentation

To stop Google Docs from automatically indenting headers, you need to adjust the default style properties for the specific heading level you are using, ensuring its margin settings match your normal text.

First, type a header into your document and apply the desired Heading style (e.g., Format > Paragraph styles > Heading 1 > Apply ‘Heading 1’). You will likely see it automatically indent. Highlight the entire header text. Look at the ruler at the top of the document (if you don’t see it, click View > Show ruler). You will see a small blue rectangle (First Line Indent) and a blue triangle (Left Indent) on the ruler. Click and drag both of these blue markers all the way to the left margin (the grey/white boundary) so they align with your normal text. Now, while the header is still highlighted with the corrected indentation, go to Format > Paragraph styles > Heading 1 (or whichever level you are fixing), and click Update ‘Heading 1’ to match. Google Docs has now learned that this heading style should not have an indent. Future headers you create in this document will no longer automatically indent.
