The Math Mishap
Google Docs is equipped with an “Automatic Substitution” feature designed to make typing standard text faster and cleaner. One of its default behaviors is looking for common fractional inputs, such as typing “1/2” or “3/4”, and instantly converting them into single, stylized unicode fraction characters (like ½ or ¾). While this looks elegant in a recipe or a casual letter, it is a massive problem for programmers writing code snippets, technical writers documenting file paths, or anyone writing mathematical equations where the numbers and the forward slash must remain as distinct, separate characters for the text to make sense or be copy-pasted correctly.
Preserving the Forward Slash
To ensure your numbers remain exactly as you typed them and stop Google Docs from automatically converting fractions into stylized characters, you must disable those specific substitutions in the preferences menu.
Open the Google Doc where you are experiencing the issue. Go to the top menu bar and click on Tools. Scroll down the dropdown menu and select Preferences. A new dialogue box will appear. Click on the Substitutions tab. Here, you will see a long list of automatic replacements. Scroll down this list and look for the specific fraction entries (you will see “1/2” on the left and “½” on the right). Click the small checkboxes next to 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, and any other fractions listed to uncheck them. Do not uncheck the master toggle at the top unless you want to disable all substitutions entirely. Click OK. Google Docs will now leave your slashes and numbers completely alone.
