How to Disable Energy Saver Completely in Google Chrome

The Sluggish Performance

Google Chrome has historically been criticized for consuming massive amounts of RAM. To combat this, Google introduced an “Energy Saver” mode (often grouped with Memory Saver). When active on a laptop running on battery power, Energy Saver aggressively throttles background activity, limits the frame rate of animations, and reduces the visual fidelity of websites. While this undoubtedly extends your battery life, it can make Chrome feel incredibly sluggish and unresponsive. Web applications might lag, scrolling becomes jittery, and complex sites might fail to load properly, creating a frustrating experience when you actually need full browser performance while away from a charger.

Unleashing Maximum Power

To prioritize raw performance over battery longevity and disable the Energy Saver feature completely in Google Chrome, you must adjust the browser’s internal performance settings.

Open Google Chrome. Click the three vertical dots (the customize menu) in the extreme top-right corner of the window and select Settings. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on the section labelled Performance. Look for the “Power” section on the right side of the screen. You will see a prominent toggle switch explicitly named Energy Saver. Click this toggle switch to turn it Off. With this disabled, Chrome will no longer artificially limit background activity or throttle frame rates when your laptop is unplugged. The browser will operate at maximum capacity, drawing as much power as it needs to render complex websites smoothly, regardless of your battery level.
