How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Changing the Default Font

The Default Arial

Google Docs defaults to a standard, legible font, typically Arial size 11, for all new, blank documents. If your company branding requires Roboto, or if you personally prefer drafting your novels in Times New Roman, you will find yourself manually highlighting all your text and changing the font every single time you click “New Document.” Over weeks and months, this repetitive formatting chore becomes incredibly tedious. Google Docs does not automatically adapt to your preference just because you use a specific font frequently; you must explicitly tell it to alter its foundational template.

Updating the Normal Text Style

To save time and stop Google Docs from automatically reverting to Arial for every new file, you must update the core “Normal text” style and set it as your account-wide default.

Open a blank Google Docs document. Type a single sentence into the page. Highlight that sentence. Using the top toolbar, change the font to your exact preference (e.g., Times New Roman), set the size (e.g., 12), and adjust the line spacing if necessary. Leave the text highlighted. Now, click on the Format menu at the top, hover over Paragraph styles, then hover over Normal text, and finally select Update ‘Normal text’ to match. The specific document is now updated. To make it permanent for the future, click on the Format menu again, hover over Paragraph styles, scroll to the very bottom, hover over Options, and click Save as my default styles. From now on, every new document you create will instantly start with your preferred typography.
