The Silent Suppressor
By default, Google Chrome aggressively blocks pop-up windows. This is generally a fantastic security and usability feature, preventing malicious websites from spamming your screen with advertisements or fake virus alerts. However, many legitimate enterprise tools, banking portals, and university testing environments rely on pop-ups to open secure secondary windows (like a secure login prompt or a PDF receipt). If Chrome automatically blocks these essential pop-ups, the website will appear broken, and you might miss critical information or be unable to complete a transaction.
Creating Site Exceptions
To ensure vital web applications function correctly and stop Google Chrome from automatically blocking pop-ups on specific, trusted websites, you must add an exception to the browser’s security rules.
Navigate to the website that requires pop-ups (e.g., your bank’s portal). When Chrome blocks a pop-up, a tiny icon resembling a browser window with a red ‘X’ will silently appear in the far right corner of the address bar. Click this icon. A small menu will drop down. Select the radio button labelled Always allow pop-ups and redirects from [website name], and then click Done. Alternatively, you can manage this globally by clicking the three vertical dots (top right), selecting Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Pop-ups and redirects. Under the “Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects” section, click the Add button and manually type in the URL of the trusted website.
