The Google Drive desktop application (Google Drive for Desktop) enables seamless synchronisation between your local file system and Google Cloud storage. However, by default, the installer configures Google Drive to launch automatically whenever you turn on or log in to your computer. While useful for users who require continuous background syncing throughout the workday, having Google Drive spin up on boot can consume substantial memory, trigger disk I/O, and visibly slow down the operating system startup sequence on both Windows and macOS.
Disabling Automatic Startup inside Google Drive Settings
The cleanest and most reliable way to disable startup behaviour is directly through the Google Drive application preferences, preventing the app from re-enabling itself after future updates:
- Locate the Google Drive icon in your system tray (bottom-right taskbar corner on Windows) or menu bar (top-right corner on macOS).
- Click the Google Drive icon to reveal the activity flyout panel.
- Click the Settings gear icon located in the upper-right corner of the flyout.
- Select Preferences from the contextual menu.
- In the Preferences window, click the Settings gear icon in the top-right corner once again to open advanced preferences.
- Scroll down through the advanced options to the section labelled Launch Google Drive on system startup.
- Uncheck the box next to Launch Google Drive on system startup.
- Click Save in the top corner and click Restart now if prompted to apply the configuration.
Preventing Startup via Windows 11 Task Manager
On Windows systems, you can also manage and verify startup status through the native operating system controls:
- Press
Ctrl + Shift + Escsimultaneously to launch Task Manager. - Select the Startup apps tab from the navigation sidebar on the left (represented by a speedometer icon).
- Locate Google Drive in the application list.
- Right-click on Google Drive and choose Disable.
- Check the Startup impact column; disabling Google Drive reduces the initial boot load from “High” or “Medium” to zero.
Removing Google Drive from macOS Login Items
On Mac computers running macOS Ventura, Sonoma, or Sequoia, manage background login items through System Settings:
- Click the Apple menu () at the top left of your screen and select System Settings.
- Navigate to General in the left sidebar, then click Login Items & Extensions.
- Under the Open at Login section, locate Google Drive in the list.
- Select Google Drive and click the minus (
−) button below the list to remove it from automatic launch. - Additionally, scroll down to the Allow in the Background section and ensure Google Drive background helpers are toggled off if you only want the client active when manually opened.
