How to Download Multiple Folders as a Single ZIP File from Google Drive

Whether archiving completed client engagements, creating local offline backups of media projects, or moving assets out of cloud storage before account migration, extracting entire folder hierarchies from Google Drive is a routine necessity. While downloading files individually takes considerable time, Google Drive’s web interface includes an automated server-side compression engine. When you select multiple folders simultaneously, Google Drive automatically packages their contents into a consolidated ZIP archive for rapid downloading.

Selecting Multiple Folders in the Web Interface

You can bundle multiple directories into a single download batch using standard multi-select commands:

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to Google Drive (drive.google.com).
  2. Navigate to the parent directory containing the folders you wish to extract.
  3. To select contiguous folders in a row, click the first folder, hold down the Shift key, and click the final folder.
  4. To select non-adjacent folders across your directory grid, hold down the Ctrl key on Windows (or Command key on macOS) and click each target folder individually.
  5. A blue highlight perimeter and checkmark will confirm that all desired folders are selected.

Initiating the Server-Side ZIP Packaging

Once your folders are highlighted, trigger the export process:

  1. Right-click on any of the selected folder cards, or click the More actions button (the three vertical dots â‹®) in the floating toolbar at the top.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select Download.
  3. In the bottom-right corner of the browser window, Google Drive displays a small status card: “Zipping files…”.
  4. Google’s cloud infrastructure compiles the folders and subdirectories into one or more compressed .zip files without modifying your original cloud storage assets.
  5. Once packaging finishes, your browser automatically initiates the download to your local machine (saving to your standard Downloads folder).

Managing Large Downloads and Archive Splitting

When downloading extensive directories containing thousands of files or gigabytes of media, observe Google Drive’s operational limits:

  • 2 GB Archive Splitting: To prevent HTTP timeout errors and corruption, Google Drive automatically splits downloads exceeding 2 GB into numbered multiple ZIP parts (e.g. drive-download-part1.zip, drive-download-part2.zip). Extract each archive into the same destination directory to reconstruct the full folder hierarchy.
  • Blocked Pop-up Permissions: If your browser blocks multiple simultaneous file downloads, ensure you allow download pop-ups from drive.google.com when prompted by Chrome, Edge, or Safari.
  • Google Docs Conversion: Native cloud files (Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides) inside the folders are automatically converted during zipping into standard Microsoft Office formats (.docx, .xlsx, and .pptx) so they remain fully readable offline.
