How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Creating Lists When Typing Numbers

Why Does Google Docs Create Unwanted Lists?

When typing in Google Docs, you might start a paragraph with a number followed by a period (like “1.”) or a symbol (like an asterisk “*”). By default, Google Docs interprets this as an instruction to start an automatic numbered or bulleted list, immediately shifting your text to the right and adding list formatting.

If you are writing a script, drafting legal documents, or simply formatting your text in a specific way that requires a number at the beginning of a line without list indentation, this aggressive auto-formatting can be extremely disruptive.

How to Stop Automatic Lists in Google Docs

You can turn off this auto-formatting feature through the Preferences menu.

  1. Open a document in Google Docs on your computer.
  2. Click on Tools in the top menu bar.
  3. Select Preferences from the dropdown menu.
  4. In the Preferences window, ensure the General tab is selected (not Substitutions).
  5. Look down the list of checkboxes for the option labelled Automatically detect lists.
  6. Uncheck the box next to this option.
  7. Click the blue OK button to save your changes.

From now on, when you type “1.” and press the spacebar, the text will remain exactly where you typed it as plain text. If you genuinely want to create a list later, you will need to manually click the Bulleted List or Numbered List icons in the formatting toolbar.
