The Indentation Automation Engine
Google Docs is designed to heavily assist users with document formatting, particularly when creating structured lists. One of its most aggressive automated behaviors involves the movement of bullet points. If you are typing within a bulleted list and you press the “Tab” key at the beginning of a line, Docs assumes you want to create a nested sub-point. It automatically moves the bullet point further to the right, changes the bullet style (e.g., from a solid circle to an open circle), and adjusts the indentation of the entire paragraph.
While this automated restructuring is helpful if you are rapidly building a complex outline, it can be incredibly frustrating if you simply wanted to insert a standard tab space between the bullet point and your text for stylistic reasons. The moment you hit Tab, the entire structure of your list shifts unexpectedly, forcing you to use the “Decrease Indent” button or hit Backspace to fight against the software’s assumptions. If you prefer to manually control the exact placement and indentation level of your lists without the word processor automatically shifting your bullet points around, you must disable the auto-formatting engine.
How to Stop Automatic Bullet Shifting
You can prevent Google Docs from automatically changing list levels when you press Tab via the Preferences menu.
- Open your document in Google Docs.
- Look at the top toolbar and click on the Tools menu.
- Scroll down the dropdown list and select Preferences.
- In the Preferences window, ensure you are on the General tab.
- Look down the list of checkboxes for the option labelled Automatically detect lists.
- Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
- Click the blue OK button to save your changes.
Google Docs will instantly stop overriding your keystrokes within lists. When you press Tab next to a bullet point, it will simply insert a blank space rather than forcefully moving the entire line to a new indentation level.
