How to Disable the Hidden ‘Timeline’ Feature in Windows 10 to Improve Privacy

What is the Windows Timeline Feature?

Introduced in Windows 10, the Timeline feature keeps a visual history of the applications you have opened, websites you have visited in Edge, and documents you have edited over the past 30 days. By pressing Windows Key + Tab, you can scroll back through time to resume your previous activities.

While this is an excellent productivity tool for solo users, it presents a significant privacy risk if you share your computer with family members or colleagues, as anyone can easily see your past activity. If you prioritize privacy over convenience, you can permanently disable Timeline and clear your existing history.

How to Turn Off Timeline in Windows 10

You can manage and completely disable the Timeline feature within the Windows Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start button and open the Settings app (the gear icon).
  2. Select Privacy from the main Settings menu.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down under the “Windows permissions” section and click on Activity history.
  4. Look for the two checkboxes at the top of the window:
    • Store my activity history on this device
    • Send my activity history to Microsoft
  5. Uncheck both boxes. This stops Windows from recording any future activity locally or syncing it to your Microsoft account.
  6. Next, you need to delete the data that has already been saved. Scroll down to the Clear activity history section on the same page.
  7. Click the Clear button. (You may be prompted to confirm this action).
  8. Finally, under “Show activities from these accounts,” toggle the switch to Off next to your Microsoft account name.

Once you complete these steps, pressing Windows Key + Tab will only show your currently open windows (Task View), and your past 30 days of activity will no longer be visible or recorded.
