The Distracting Math Suggestions
Google Docs is continuously implementing AI-driven “smart” features. One of these is the automatic equation suggestion tool. When you are working on a document and begin typing out a mathematical formula, Docs will attempt to analyze your keystrokes and display a floating box with a suggested, properly formatted equation, allowing you to press Tab to instantly insert it.
While this might sound helpful for a mathematics student, it can be incredibly irritating for everyone else. If you are typing a standard sentence that happens to contain numbers and symbols (e.g., “The profit margin = 50% / total revenue”), having an aggressive pop-up box trying to format your text into a complex algebra equation breaks your concentration and clutters the screen. If you prefer to type your text exactly as you want without AI interference, you can disable these suggestions.
How to Turn Off Equation Suggestions
You can disable the smart math formatting in the Tools menu.
- Open a document in Google Docs.
- Look at the top toolbar and click on Tools.
- Select Preferences from the dropdown list.
- In the Preferences window, ensure you are on the General tab.
- Look down the list of checkboxes for the options related to smart suggestions.
- Specifically, look for the checkbox labelled Show equation suggestions.
- Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
- Click the blue OK button to save your changes.
The predictive math engine is now disabled. You can type numbers, equals signs, and fractions freely without Google Docs attempting to format them into formal equations.
