How to Disable the “Help Me Write” AI Feature in Google Docs

The Distraction of Generative AI

Google recently integrated its powerful generative AI engine directly into Google Workspace, including Google Docs. Now, whenever you open a new, blank document, you are immediately greeted by a prominent, floating blue pill-shaped button that says “Help me write.” Furthermore, as you type, a small pencil icon persistently hovers in the left margin, offering to rewrite, summarize, or expand upon your paragraphs. While these tools can be incredibly helpful for drafting quick emails, they can be a massive visual distraction for creative writers, students, or professionals who prefer to focus solely on their own organic writing process. If you find the constant presence of the AI tool annoying, you can disable it.

How to Turn Off “Help Me Write”

The toggle to disable this feature is not located within the Google Docs interface itself; it is tied to your broader Google Workspace settings.

  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Look for the floating “Help me write” icon (the pencil with a spark star). Click it to open the AI dialog box.
  3. Instead of typing a prompt, click the small Settings gear icon located in the top right corner of the small AI pop-up window.
  4. Click on Turn off Help me write.
  5. A confirmation window will appear. Click Turn off.

Alternative Method (Workspace Admin)

If you are using a corporate Google Workspace account and cannot find the gear icon, the feature must be disabled globally.

  1. Log into the Google Workspace Admin Console.
  2. Navigate to Generative AI > Duet AI settings (or Gemini for Workspace).
  3. Locate the Help me write feature toggle and switch it to Off for your specific organizational unit.

Once disabled, the blue pill button and the floating margin icon will completely disappear from all your Google Docs, returning you to a clean, distraction-free writing environment.
