How to Disable the Built-In Translation Prompt in Chrome

The Language Interception Vector

Google Chrome features an integrated translation engine designed to automatically detect foreign languages. By default, whenever you visit a website written in a language other than your system’s primary language, Chrome forcefully injects a pop-up dialogue box near the address bar asking if you would like the page translated. For bilingual users, language students, or developers testing internationalized applications, this constant interception is highly intrusive and unnecessarily consumes screen space.

How to Disable the Translation Prompt

You can instruct Chrome to completely disable this detection algorithm, ensuring you can browse foreign websites without constant interruption.

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Languages.
5. Look at the section titled Google Translate.
6. Locate the toggle switch labelled Use Google Translate.
7. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

Chrome will immediately cease its linguistic analysis of the websites you visit. If you ever genuinely need to translate a specific page in the future, you can still right-click anywhere on the blank space of the website and select “Translate to English” from the manual context menu.
