How to Block Push Notifications Globally in Google Chrome

The Constant Harassment

One of the most heavily abused features of the modern internet is the web-based “Push Notification.” When you visit almost any news website, recipe blog, or online store, a drop-down menu instantly violently interrupts you, begging for permission to “Send Notifications.” If you accidentally click “Allow,” the website can push massive advertising banners directly onto your computer desktop at any hour of the day, even when you aren’t looking at the site. If you refuse to be harassed by marketing spam, you must force Google Chrome to automatically block every single notification request.

How to Block Push Notifications Globally

You can permanently lock the browser out of the desktop notification system via the Site Settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
  4. In the main window, click on Site settings.
  5. Under the “Permissions” heading, click on Notifications.
  6. Under the “Default behavior” heading, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to send notifications.”

Absolute Silence

The change takes effect instantly. Google Chrome will completely sever the connection to the Windows or macOS notification API. The browser will instantly auto-reject every single notification request it receives from any website. You will never again see the annoying “Wants to send notifications” pop-up, and you will never again receive a desktop banner advertisement from a web browser.
