How to Block Insecure Content (Mixed Content) Globally in Chrome

The Mixed Content Danger

Modern web security relies entirely on HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) to encrypt data between your browser and a website. However, some poorly coded secure websites attempt to load images, scripts, or video frames over the old, unencrypted HTTP protocol. This creates a “Mixed Content” scenario. While Google Chrome blocks dangerous active scripts by default, it often allows passive insecure content (like images) to load, degrading the security of the entire page. If you are operating on a public Wi-Fi network and demand absolute cryptographic integrity, you must force Chrome to ruthlessly block all insecure elements.

How to Block Insecure Content Globally

You can permanently mandate strict HTTPS rendering via Chrome’s Site Settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
  4. In the main window, click on Site settings.
  5. Scroll down to the “Permissions” heading and click to expand Additional permissions.
  6. Click on Insecure content.
  7. Under the “Default behavior” heading, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to show insecure content.”

Cryptographic Isolation

The change takes effect instantly. Google Chrome will completely sever its tolerance for unencrypted data packets within secure environments. If you visit a secure HTTPS banking website, and that website attempts to load a single image over an insecure HTTP connection, Chrome will instantly intercept and destroy that specific network request in the background. The image will appear as a broken link. This guarantees that absolutely no unencrypted data can ever sneak into your secure browsing session, providing maximum defense against man-in-the-middle attacks.
