Google Chrome is a highly optimized web browser that utilizes a feature called “Hardware Acceleration” to speed up page rendering. When this feature is enabled (which it is by default), Chrome offloads demanding graphical tasks—like playing 4K YouTube videos, rendering complex CSS animations, or running WebGL browser games—from your computer’s main processor (CPU) to its dedicated graphics card (GPU). While this generally results in a much smoother, faster browsing experience, it can occasionally cause severe graphical glitches. If your graphics card drivers are outdated or buggy, you might experience screen tearing, flickering black boxes over images, or video playback stuttering exclusively inside Chrome. Disabling hardware acceleration forces Chrome to rely solely on the CPU, which often resolves these visual artifacts instantly.
How to Disable Hardware Acceleration
Disabling this feature is a simple toggle within Chrome’s advanced settings menu. You do not need administrative privileges on your computer to change this setting.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner of the browser window to open the main menu.
- Select Settings from the dropdown list.
- In the Settings tab, look at the left-hand navigation sidebar. Scroll down and click on System.
- On the right side of the screen, you will see an option labelled Use graphics acceleration when available (in older versions of Chrome, this was explicitly called “Use hardware acceleration when available”).
- Click the toggle switch next to this option to turn it Off (the switch will turn grey).
- A Relaunch button will immediately appear next to the toggle. Click it.
Chrome will completely close and automatically reopen, restoring all your previously open tabs. Hardware acceleration is now disabled.
When Should You Re-enable It?
Running Chrome without hardware acceleration puts a heavier load on your CPU. If you are using a laptop, you might notice your cooling fans spinning louder or your battery draining slightly faster when watching high-definition video. Therefore, disabling it should ideally be treated as a temporary workaround rather than a permanent fix.
If disabling hardware acceleration fixes your screen tearing, the root cause of the problem is almost certainly an issue with your computer’s GPU drivers. You should visit the website of your graphics card manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) and download the latest drivers for your specific hardware. Once the new drivers are installed and your computer is rebooted, you should return to Chrome’s System settings, toggle hardware acceleration back On, and test if the graphical glitches have been resolved. If the tearing returns, leave it disabled until the next major driver update is released.
