If you use Gmail for your personal or professional communications, your inbox is likely overflowing with newsletters, marketing blasts, and promotional offers. While these emails might be briefly useful for catching a flash sale, they quickly become digital clutter. Instead of spending hours manually deleting thousands of old promotional emails, you can use a hidden Gmail search filter to automatically delete them after they reach a certain age.
How to Search for Old Promotional Emails
To automate this process, we first need to build a specific search query that isolates the correct emails based on their category and age.
- Open Gmail in your web browser.
- Click the Show search options icon (the toggle switches) located on the far right side of the main search bar at the top of the screen.
- In the dropdown menu, find the Has the words field and type exactly:
category:promotions older_than:30d - Click the blue Search button to verify the query works. You should see a list of all your promotional emails that are older than 30 days.
How to Create the Auto-Delete Filter
Now that we have isolated the target emails, we need to instruct Gmail to handle them automatically in the future.
- Click the Show search options icon again to reopen the search menu with your query still inside it.
- Instead of clicking Search, click Create filter at the bottom of the dropdown menu.
- Gmail will ask you what you want to do with messages that match this search. Check the box next to Delete it.
- To clean up your current mess immediately, also check the box at the very bottom labelled Also apply filter to matching conversations.
- Click the blue Create filter button.
Your inbox is now completely self-cleaning. Every time a newsletter hits the 30-day mark, Gmail will automatically push it into the Trash folder. (Note: Emails in the Trash folder are permanently and automatically deleted by Google after an additional 30 days, meaning the promotional emails will be entirely eradicated from your account after 60 days).
