How to Disable the Google Docs ‘Offline’ Syncing on Shared Computers

The Security Risk of Local Syncing

Google Docs includes a highly useful “Offline” feature. When enabled, this feature downloads cached versions of your most recently opened documents directly to your local hard drive. This allows you to continue writing and editing your essays or spreadsheets even if your internet connection drops, syncing the changes back to the cloud once you reconnect.

While this is fantastic for a personal laptop, it is a massive security and privacy risk if you are using a shared computer, a library terminal, or a hot-desk workstation at the office. If Offline syncing is left on, the next person to use that web browser could potentially open Google Docs and view or edit your locally cached files without needing your password. You must disable this feature on shared machines.

How to Turn Off Offline Syncing

You must disable this feature from the main Google Drive or Docs dashboard, not from within a specific document.

  1. Open your web browser and navigate to the main Google Docs dashboard (docs.google.com).
  2. In the top-left corner of the screen, click the Main Menu (the three horizontal lines or “hamburger” icon).
  3. Click on Settings.
  4. A popup window will appear. Look for the toggle switch labelled Offline (Create, open, and edit your recent Google Docs files on this device while offline).
  5. Toggle the switch to the Off position.
  6. Click the blue OK button to save your changes.

Google will immediately delete the local cache of your documents from that specific browser. Your files are now safely stored only in the cloud, and the next person to use the computer will not be able to access your work.
