What is the Equation Toolbar?
Google Docs includes a built-in Equation tool that allows students, teachers, and scientists to easily insert complex mathematical formulas, fractions, and symbols (like Alpha, Beta, or square roots) directly into their documents.
However, if you accidentally trigger this feature (often by pressing a stray keyboard shortcut), a bulky blue “Equation” toolbar permanently docks itself directly underneath your main formatting ribbon. If you only write standard text essays or business reports and never use mathematical formulas, this secondary toolbar simply wastes valuable vertical screen space. You can easily turn it off.
How to Hide the Equation Toolbar in Google Docs
Disabling the toolbar is a simple one-click process within the View menu.
- Open your document in Google Docs on your web browser.
- Look at the top menu bar (where it says File, Edit, View, etc.).
- Click on the View menu.
- In the dropdown list, look for the option labelled Show equation toolbar. If the toolbar is currently visible on your screen, this option will have a checkmark next to it.
- Click on “Show equation toolbar” to uncheck it.
The bulky blue math ribbon will instantly vanish from your screen, giving you back a cleaner, more streamlined writing environment.
Note: If you ever actually need to write a math formula in the future, you can easily bring the toolbar back by going to the Insert menu > Equation, or by returning to the View menu and re-checking the box.
