Focus Modes on iOS are incredibly useful for muting distractions during work, sleep, or driving. By default, when you activate a Focus Mode, your iPhone automatically shares your “Focus Status” with anyone who tries to send you an iMessage. They will see a small note at the bottom of their chat thread saying, “User has notifications silenced.” While this is intended to politely explain why you aren’t replying, many users view it as an invasion of privacy, as they don’t want every contact to know when they are asleep or at work. If you prefer to mute your phone in total secrecy, you can easily disable this status broadcasting.
How to Stop Sharing Your Focus Status
You can turn off this feature globally, meaning none of your Focus Modes will ever alert your contacts that you have notifications silenced.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Focus.
- At the bottom of the main Focus menu, tap on Focus Status.
- You will see a master toggle switch at the top labelled Share Focus Status.
- Tap the switch to move it to the Off position (the green background will turn to grey).
Managing Individual Focus Modes
If you prefer a more tailored approach—for example, you want your family to know when you are driving, but you don’t want anyone to know when you are sleeping—you can leave the master switch On.
Below the master switch, you will see a list of all your currently configured Focus Modes (Do Not Disturb, Personal, Sleep, Work, etc.). You can individually toggle the switches next to each mode to decide exactly which ones are allowed to broadcast your silenced status to the world.
