The Intrusive Translation Bar
Google Chrome has a built-in feature called Google Translate. Whenever you navigate to a website that is written in a language different from your operating system’s default language, Chrome automatically drops a small bar down from the address bar (or displays a popup) asking, “Translate this page?” and offering to convert the text to English (or your native language).
If you are bilingual, learning a new language, or frequently visit foreign websites where you don’t actually need the text translated (such as downloading software or looking at images), this constant prompt is incredibly annoying. It forces you to click the ‘X’ to dismiss it on almost every new domain you visit. You can completely disable this automatic translation offer.
How to Disable the Translate Prompt
You can turn off the “Offer to translate” feature globally in Chrome’s Language settings.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the Three Vertical Dots (Menu) in the top right corner and select Settings.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Languages.
- Scroll down to the “Google Translate” section.
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Use Google Translate (or in older versions, “Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read”).
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
Chrome will no longer automatically prompt you to translate foreign websites. If you ever stumble upon a page you actually do need translated, you can simply right-click anywhere on the blank space of the webpage and manually select Translate to English from the context menu.
