The Obscuring Interface
Google Docs recently introduced a “Document Details” floating widget, which occasionally appears on the right side of your screen when you open shared documents. This widget is designed to provide a quick summary of who created the file, when it was last edited, and what permissions you currently hold. While useful for project managers tracking collaborative files, this floating panel obscures a portion of your text canvas, particularly on smaller laptop screens, forcing you to scroll horizontally or zoom out to read the full width of your document.
Dismissing the Widget Permanently
To remove this widget and reclaim your screen real estate, you must dismiss it manually. Unfortunately, Google has not provided a master settings toggle to universally ban this widget from all documents; you must train the interface to hide it on a per-document basis.
Open the Google Doc where the details widget is currently floating on the right side of the screen. Look at the very top right corner of the floating white box itself. You will see a small ‘X’ icon (the standard close button). Click this ‘X’ to immediately dismiss the widget. By actively dismissing it rather than just ignoring it, you set a cookie preference for that specific document. The next time you open that file, Google Docs will remember your preference and load the document cleanly without the floating details panel obscuring your text.
