Google Keep is designed to be a lightweight, lightning-fast digital notepad for capturing fleeting thoughts and quick reminders. Unlike its heavy-duty sibling, Google Docs, Keep intentionally strips away complex formatting toolbars to keep the interface clean. However, when you are jotting down meeting notes or creating a step-by-step recipe, a block of unstructured text can be difficult to read. While there is no visual “numbered list” button anywhere in the interface, Google Keep does support basic rich text formatting if you know the correct syntax.
How to Automatically Create a Numbered List
Google Keep relies on an intelligent auto-formatting engine that recognizes standard markdown-style syntax. You simply need to type the first number, and Keep will take over the formatting for the rest of the list.
- Open Google Keep on the web or via the mobile app.
- Click on Take a note… to create a new, blank note.
- Type the number 1. (the number one, followed immediately by a period) and press the Spacebar.
- The moment you press the spacebar, Keep will recognize your intent and automatically indent the text, aligning it into a proper list format.
- Type out your first item (e.g., “Buy groceries”).
- Press the Enter or Return key on your keyboard.
Keep will automatically generate the number 2. on the next line and place your cursor there, ready for you to type the next item.
How to Exit the Numbered List
Once the automatic formatting has taken over, it will aggressively generate numbers every single time you hit Enter. If you are finished with your list and want to return to typing standard, unformatted paragraphs, you need to break the cycle.
- After typing your final list item, press the Enter key.
- Keep will generate the next sequential number on a blank line.
- Simply press the Enter key a second time without typing anything else.
The empty number will instantly disappear, your cursor will return to the far left margin, and you can resume typing normal text.
How to Reorder List Items
A major advantage of using Keep’s automated numbered lists instead of typing numbers manually is that you can reorder the items dynamically.
- Hover your mouse cursor over any item in your active numbered list.
- A small icon with six dots (a drag handle) will appear to the far left of the number.
- Click and hold that drag handle.
- Drag the item up or down the list and release your mouse button.
Keep will instantly re-number the entire list automatically, ensuring perfect numerical order without you having to delete and re-type the numbers.
