How to Completely Disable ‘Magic Compose’ in Google Messages on Android

Google Messages on Android now includes an AI-powered feature known as Magic Compose. Designed to help users draft replies quickly, Magic Compose analyses the context of your ongoing conversations and offers stylised, AI-generated response suggestions (such as “Professional”, “Chill”, or “Excited”) directly above your keyboard.

While this tool showcases the capabilities of generative AI, many users find it entirely unnecessary. If you prefer to write your own messages, the constant presence of a glowing AI sparkle icon and a row of suggested replies can clutter the interface and distract from the conversation. Furthermore, privacy-conscious individuals may not want their text messages actively processed by AI models to generate these suggestions. If you want a cleaner messaging experience, you can completely disable Magic Compose on your Android device.

Why Disable Magic Compose?

There are several valid reasons to turn off AI-generated replies in Google Messages:

  • Interface Clutter: The suggested replies take up valuable screen real estate above the keyboard, squeezing the actual message thread.
  • Privacy Concerns: Generating contextual replies requires the app to analyse the content of your recent messages, which some users prefer to avoid.
  • Personal Authenticity: Relying on AI to dictate the tone of your messages can lead to sterile, robotic conversations that lack genuine personal touch.

How to Turn Off ‘Magic Compose’ on Android

You can disable the Magic Compose feature directly within the settings menu of the Google Messages application.

  1. Open the Google Messages app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Tap on your Profile Picture (or initial) in the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Select Messages settings from the drop-down menu.
  4. Tap on Suggestions.
  5. Locate the option labelled Magic Compose.
  6. Toggle the switch to the Off position. (Note: On some versions, you may also want to disable ‘Suggested replies’ on this same screen to completely remove all automated prompts).

Once disabled, the AI sparkle icon and the stylised response bubbles will disappear from your conversation view. You can return to typing your messages manually without AI interruptions.
