How to Completely Disable ‘Focus’ (Do Not Disturb Automation) on a Mac

macOS features a complex notification management system called “Focus” (an expansion of the older “Do Not Disturb” feature). By default, Apple heavily automates this system. It can automatically mute your notifications when you plug your Mac into an external display, when you mirror your screen, or when you launch a full-screen application or video game. Furthermore, because of Apple’s ecosystem integration, a Focus mode triggered on your iPhone will instantly sync via iCloud and mute notifications on your Mac.

While this automation is designed to reduce distractions, it frequently leads to missed important messages. If you use a dual-monitor setup, you might miss a critical Slack message from a coworker simply because your Mac decided you were “mirroring” your screen. If you prefer manual control over your notifications and want to guarantee that an incoming email or text message will always alert you regardless of what software you are running, you must completely disable these automated Focus triggers.

Disabling Automated Focus Triggers via Settings

You can strip out all the automated scheduling and display rules, forcing Focus mode to only activate when you explicitly click the button in the Control Center.

  1. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen and select System Settings….
  2. Scroll down the left-hand navigation sidebar and click on Focus.
  3. In the main panel, you will see a list of your Focus modes (e.g., Do Not Disturb, Work, Sleep). Click on Do Not Disturb.
  4. Look at the bottom half of the menu under the section labelled “Set a Schedule.”
  5. You will likely see automated rules like “While using an external display” or “When mirroring to TVs and projectors.”
  6. Click on each of these rules individually. A small popup will appear; toggle the master switch at the top to Off, or click the Delete Schedule button at the bottom of the popup to eradicate the rule entirely.

Disabling Cross-Device Focus Syncing

To prevent your iPhone from accidentally muting your Mac (or vice versa), you must sever the iCloud link between the devices for this specific feature.

  1. Return to the main Focus menu in System Settings (press the back arrow in the top-left corner).
  2. At the very bottom of the main Focus panel, look for the toggle switch labelled Share across devices.
  3. Click the toggle switch to turn it Off.

The changes take effect instantly. Your Mac will now behave like a traditional computer. It will push notifications to your screen exactly when they arrive, completely ignoring whether you have an external monitor plugged in or if your iPhone is currently in Sleep mode.
