The Memory Hog Problem
Google Chrome is notorious for consuming massive amounts of Random Access Memory (RAM). If you keep dozens of tabs open simultaneously—perhaps a mix of heavy web applications like Gmail, YouTube, and complex spreadsheets—Chrome will aggressively claim your system’s memory to keep those tabs ready for immediate viewing.
On a computer with limited RAM, this behavior causes the entire operating system to slow down, stutter, and heat up, ultimately draining battery life on laptops.
In the past, users had to install third-party extensions like “The Great Suspender” to manage this issue. However, Google has now integrated a powerful, native solution directly into the browser: Memory Saver. This performance setting automatically suspends tabs you aren’t actively using, freeing up gigabytes of RAM while keeping the tabs visible in your tab bar.
Step 1: Accessing the Performance Settings
The Memory Saver feature is located in Chrome’s dedicated Performance menu.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner of the browser window.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand sidebar of the Settings page, click on Performance.
Step 2: Enabling Memory Saver
At the top of the Performance page, you will see a toggle switch labeled Memory Saver.
Toggle the switch to the On position.
When this is enabled, Chrome begins silently monitoring your browsing activity. If you have a tab open (for example, a Wikipedia article) but you haven’t clicked on it or looked at it for an extended period, Chrome will “deactivate” it.
The tab remains in your tab bar, but the webpage data is purged from your computer’s active RAM.
Step 3: Recognizing Suspended Tabs
Chrome provides visual indicators when a tab has been suspended, ensuring you are never surprised by a page reload.
Look at your tab bar. If a tab has been put to sleep by Memory Saver, the icon (favicon) on that tab will appear slightly faded or dimmed compared to active tabs.
When you click on that faded tab, the page will instantly reload from the internet, bringing it back into active memory. You will briefly see a small notification in the address bar (a speedometer icon) that says, “Tab active again. Memory Saver freed up [X] MB for other tasks.”
Step 4: Whitelisting Essential Websites
While Memory Saver is excellent for preserving system resources, it can be destructive for certain types of websites.
For example, if you are filling out a complex, multi-page government form, or if you have a web-based chat application open, you do not want Chrome to suspend that tab. If it suspends the form, you might lose all the data you typed when the page reloads.
You must add these critical websites to the Memory Saver whitelist.
- On the Performance settings page, look just below the Memory Saver toggle for the section labeled Always keep these sites active.
- Click the Add button.
- Type the domain name of the website you want to protect (e.g.,
docs.google.comorslack.com). - Click Add.
Chrome will now aggressively suspend other tabs, but it will guarantee that your whitelisted sites remain active in memory forever, preventing data loss.
Step 5: Adjusting the Energy Saver (Laptops Only)
If you are using Chrome on a laptop (Windows or macOS), the Performance page will include a second, highly related feature called Energy Saver.
While Memory Saver manages RAM, Energy Saver manages the CPU and Graphics processing. When Energy Saver is active, Chrome reduces the framerate of animations, limits background syncing, and disables smooth scrolling to maximize battery life.
You can configure Energy Saver to turn on automatically when your laptop battery drops below 20%, or you can set it to activate immediately the moment you unplug your laptop from the wall charger, ensuring you squeeze every possible minute out of your battery.
