How to Mute Audio on Specific Websites Permanently in Google Chrome

There is nothing more disruptive during work or study sessions than browsing to a news portal, forum, or blog and having loud video advertisements or background music blast through your speakers unexpectedly. While right-clicking an active tab allows you to mute that specific instance temporarily, closing and reopening the site resets audio playback. Google Chrome provides built-in site permission controls that allow you to permanently mute audio for specific domains.

Why Permanently Mute Websites Instead of Individual Tabs?

Applying permanent sound permissions provides distinct advantages over temporary tab muting:

  • Persistent Silence: The website remains completely muted across all browser windows, incognito sessions, and future visits until you explicitly re-enable sound.
  • Multi-Tab Coverage: Muting a domain applies instantly to all open tabs belonging to that website, eliminating the need to hunt down individual audio sources.
  • Preserves Other Media: Allows you to listen to Spotify, YouTube, or podcasts in background tabs without intrusive interruptions from noisy advertising networks.

Method 1: Mute via the Address Bar Site Controls (Fastest)

The quickest way to silence an active website is through Chrome’s tune icon in the Omnibox:

  1. Navigate to the website you want to mute in Google Chrome.
  2. Click the Site settings tune icon located directly to the left of the website URL in the address bar (resembling two small sliders).
  3. In the permission flyout menu, look for Sound.
  4. If Sound appears in the quick list, click the dropdown menu and change it from Automatic (default) to Block (or Mute).
  5. If Sound does not appear in the quick list, click Site settings at the bottom of the flyout. A dedicated settings page will open. Scroll down to the Permissions section, locate Sound, and select Mute from the dropdown menu.
  6. Return to the website tab and click Reload when prompted. The domain is now permanently muted.

Method 2: Manage Muted Sites from Chrome Settings

You can also review, add, or remove blocked audio domains directly from Chrome’s central Content Settings:

  1. Click the three vertical dots menu in the top-right corner of Chrome and select Settings.
  2. In the left sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
  3. Select Site settings in the main window.
  4. Scroll down to the Content section and click on Additional content settings to expand hidden options.
  5. Click on Sound.
  6. Under the Not allowed to play sound section, click the Add button.
  7. Enter the domain you wish to silence (e.g., [*.]example.com) and click Add.

How to Unmute a Muted Website

If you later decide to allow audio on a previously muted website, navigate to that site, click the tune icon beside the URL, and switch the Sound permission back to Allow. Alternatively, remove the domain from the Not allowed to play sound list in Chrome Settings.
