Over months of daily web browsing, users inadvertently grant numerous websites sensitive device permissions—such as access to webcams, microphones, geographical locations, and desktop notifications. Sites that were visited only once often retain permanent access to hardware sensors, while forgotten web portals flood the operating system with promotional notification pop-ups. In addition, browser extensions can fall out of compliance or get removed from the Chrome Web Store due to malware concerns.
To automate privacy maintenance, Google introduced Safety Hub in Google Chrome. Operating autonomously in the background, Safety Hub identifies compromised user credentials, revokes unused site permissions, flags untrustworthy browser extensions, and silences abusive web notifications without requiring manual privacy audits.
Accessing the Chrome Safety Hub Dashboard
To review real-time security alerts and automated privacy actions inside Google Chrome:
- Launch Google Chrome on your desktop.
- Click the three-dot Customise and control Google Chrome menu icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Privacy and security.
- Safety Hub is prominently displayed at the top of the interface, showcasing a summary card of your current security status.
Alternatively, you can jump directly to the configuration module by typing chrome://settings/safetyCheck into Chrome’s Omnibox address bar and pressing Enter.
Managing Automatically Revoked Site Permissions
One of Safety Hub’s primary automated features is permission expiry for dormant websites:
- If you have not visited a website for an extended period, Safety Hub automatically revokes its permission to access your camera, microphone, clipboard, and location data.
- Within the Safety Hub dashboard, locate the section titled Removed permissions.
- Click on the category to view which domains had permissions stripped and which specific sensors were protected.
- If you frequently use a specific domain and wish to retain permanent access, click the Undo or Keep button next to the listed website.
- To confirm all revocations, click Got it to dismiss the notification.
Silencing Disruptive Notifications and Abusive Alerts
Websites often employ deceptive user-interface patterns to trick users into accepting browser push notifications, which are subsequently used to deliver spam or misleading security warnings:
- Safety Hub actively audits domains that transmit disproportionate volumes of notifications or display spam-like behavior.
- Under the Review notifications section, Safety Hub groups domains flagged for excessive notification frequencies.
- Click Don’t allow next to any flagged domain to revoke its notification permission instantly.
- To mute all flagged notification senders in a single action, click the Reset all button.
Auditing Passwords and Malicious Extensions
Safety Hub continuously synchronizes with Google’s Safe Browsing telemetry to safeguard credentials and browser stability:
- Compromised Credentials: Click on Passwords inside Safety Hub to review credentials detected in public third-party data breaches. Click Change password next to any compromised entry to update your login credentials on the affected service.
- Potentially Harmful Extensions: If an installed extension is discovered to violate Chrome Web Store security guidelines or contains malicious code, Safety Hub flags it in the Extensions card. Click Review to inspect the detected risks, then click Remove to eliminate the extension from your browser profile completely.
