How to Enable Global Media Controls in Google Chrome

The Lost Audio Tab

If you are a power user who constantly keeps forty tabs open across three different Google Chrome windows, finding the specific tab that is currently playing a YouTube video or an irritating autoplay advertisement is a nightmare. Historically, you had to manually hunt through the tiny tab icons looking for a tiny speaker symbol. To solve this, Google built a feature called “Global Media Controls.” This places a persistent, easily accessible button directly in the main Chrome toolbar that acts as a universal remote control for any audio or video playing anywhere inside the browser, regardless of which tab is currently active.

How to Enable Global Media Controls via Chrome Flags

While this feature is slowly rolling out to all users by default, if it is missing from your toolbar, you can force it on using the hidden experimental flags menu.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. In the URL address bar at the top, type the following exactly as written:
  3. chrome://flags
  4. Press Enter to load the hidden developer dashboard.
  5. In the “Search flags” box at the top of the screen, type: Global Media Controls
  6. The specific experiment will highlight in yellow. Click the dropdown menu next to it (which currently says “Default”).
  7. Select Enabled from the list.
  8. Chrome will prompt you to apply the changes. Click the blue Relaunch button at the bottom of the screen.

How to Use the Universal Remote

Once Chrome restarts, the button won’t appear immediately. It only reveals itself when media is actually playing.

  1. Open a new tab, navigate to YouTube, and start playing a video.
  2. Look at the top right corner of your Chrome browser, right next to your profile picture and extensions. You will see a new icon that looks like a music note with three lines.
  3. Click that icon.

A sleek, dark-themed media player panel will drop down. This panel displays the album art, the title of the video, and the name of the website. Most importantly, it gives you massive Play, Pause, Fast Forward, and Rewind buttons. You can use this panel to instantly mute a noisy tab without ever having to find where that tab is actually located on your screen.
