The Cluttered History View
Google Chrome recently updated its History page to include a feature called “Journeys” (sometimes referred to as History Clusters). Instead of just presenting a simple, chronological list of every website you visited, Chrome attempts to group your browsing history into thematic clusters based on search intent. For example, if you spend an hour researching “best running shoes,” Chrome will group all those Amazon and Nike links together into a single “Journey.”
While this sounds helpful in theory, many users find it incredibly frustrating in practice. The clustering algorithm often miscategorizes sites, and it breaks the straightforward timeline view that power users rely on to trace their exact steps backward. If you find the new clustered view confusing and prefer a strict, time-based list of your browsing history, you can disable the Journeys feature.
How to Disable the “Journeys” View
You can turn off the clustering feature directly from the History page settings.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Press
Ctrl + H(orCmd + Yon Mac) to open the History page, or click the three dots > History > History. - On the left-hand sidebar of the History page, look for the option labelled Turn off Journeys. (If you don’t see it there, click on “Journeys” at the top of the page, and then look for a toggle switch or a “Turn off” link on the left).
- Alternatively, you can disable it via Chrome’s main settings: Go to Settings > You and Google > Sync and Google services.
- Toggle off the switch for Make searches and browsing better (which feeds the clustering algorithm).
Once disabled, the “Journeys” tab will disappear, and your Chrome history will return to its classic, predictable behavior: a simple, chronologically ordered list of every URL you have visited, from newest to oldest.
