The Microscopic Layout
Google Chrome remembers your preferences on a per-site basis. If you visit a website with incredibly tiny text and use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Plus) to zoom in to 150%, Chrome silently saves that preference. The next time you visit that specific domain, Chrome will automatically zoom in to 150% the moment the page loads. While this is a great accessibility feature, it can be maddening if you accidentally zoomed in by bumping your mouse wheel while holding Ctrl, and now every time you visit Wikipedia, the layout is massively distorted and requires constant manual resetting.
Resetting the Global Zoom
To restore standard web layouts and stop Google Chrome from automatically zooming in on specific websites, you must clear your saved zoom levels in the browser’s settings.
Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of Chrome and select Settings. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Appearance. Look at the Page zoom dropdown menu and ensure it is set to 100% (this is the baseline for all new sites). Now, you must clear the specific sites that are stuck. In the left sidebar, click on Privacy and security, then click Site settings. Scroll all the way to the bottom and click on Additional content settings to expand it. Click on Zoom levels. Here you will see a list of every website you have ever manually zoomed. Click the X next to any site on this list to delete the saved preference. The next time you visit that site, it will load normally at 100%.
