How to Stop Google Chrome from Automatically Launching the Profile Picker

The Identity Crisis

Google Chrome strongly encourages users to sign in with a Google Account to sync bookmarks, history, and passwords across devices. If you share a home computer with your family, you likely have multiple Chrome profiles set up (one for you, one for your spouse, etc.). By default, when you launch Chrome, it will often automatically open a large, intrusive “Profile Picker” window right in the middle of your screen, forcing you to click on your specific face or name before it actually loads a web browser window. If you are the primary user of the PC, this extra required click every single time you want to search the web is highly annoying.

Bypassing the Profile Screen

To speed up your browsing and stop Google Chrome from automatically launching the profile picker on startup, you must adjust the profile settings or tweak the shortcut properties.

The easiest method is to simply uncheck a box on the picker screen itself. Launch Chrome so the Profile Picker window appears. Look closely at the bottom-right corner of this specific window. You should see a small checkbox labelled Show on startup. Uncheck this box. Then, click on your preferred profile to launch the browser. The next time you open Chrome, it will completely skip the picker screen and instantly load the profile you just selected. If you ever need to switch users, simply click your profile icon in the top right corner of the active browser window and select the other user from the drop-down menu.
